To The Sky Throw Quilt Pattern

As we all know quilting, an age-old craft that has stood the test of time, continues to captivate us with its unique blend of creativity, tradition, and artistry. For many, quilting is not just a hobby but a passion that offers a sense of accomplishment and a means of expressing individuality.

One of the most exciting aspects of quilting is the endless possibilities it presents for discovering new quilt patterns. From classic designs like log cabin and star quilts to modern interpretations and improvisations, the world of quilt patterns is a treasure trove waiting to be explored.

Each new quilt pattern brings with it a sense of anticipation and creativity, challenging quilters to experiment with different shapes, sizes, and color combinations. The joy of uncovering a fresh pattern and translating it into a stunning quilt is a thrill that keeps us coming back for more.

The To The Sky quilt pattern is my newest throw-sized quilt pattern in the Wax and Wane Studio shop. This pattern features multiple star shapes, curves, and stripes carefully arranged to evoke a sense of wonder and magic just like looking at the night’s sky.

The Story Behind To The Sky

Growing up, I was always fascinated by the night sky. The stars, the moon, and the sense of vastness and mystery it held captivated me. And somehow I wanted to incorporate that fascination into a quilt design. That’s where the idea for To The Sky and its four unique block designs came from.

Though it was inspired by the night sky, the reason I created this quilt pattern was to showcase my Dreaming fabric collection. Not only is it a perfect way to display your favorite fabrics, but it's also a great opportunity to practice beginner and intermediate quilt piecing skills.

From half-square triangles to split-quarter-square triangles, curves, and strip piecing, To The Sky is a perfect way to practice and master various techniques. And with the detailed instructions and tips included in the pattern, even beginner quilters can take on this challenge and create a beautiful piece.

Dreaming Fabrics and Hand Quilting

For this test version of To The Sky I used four fabrics from my Dreaming collection as the background fabrics. They are called Moonflower Trellis in Storm, Moonstones in Dust, Sprinkle Geo in Sky, and Wax and Wane in Lapis.

For the foregrounds I used the colors Haze, Lapis, Storm, Shitake in Kona Cotton Solids. I used Phoebe Dot in Dew, also from my Dreaming collection for the back of the quilt and a teal colored solid fabric from my stash for the binding.

I chose to hand quilt this throw with a diagonal grid, a design I haven’t tried before, and I love the way it turned out. I used DMC’s Perle Cotton in size 8, color number 01.

Make Your Own To The Sky Quilt

There are so many fabric combinations and possibilities to make this fun quilt pattern your own. Here are just a few ideas to spark some inspiration. When you’re ready you can grab the pattern in my shop.

You could go monochrome, using just one color for the background and one color for the foreground.

This mock-up uses Starry in Leaf, Wax and Wane in Leaf, Phoebe Dot in Leaf, and Lunar Lights in Leaf all from the Dreaming collection for the background and Kona Lapis for the foreground.

Try using neutrals for the background and a bright pop of color for the foreground.

This mock-up uses Overcast in Fog, Moonstones in Shadow, Moongarden in Dew, and Sprinkle Geo in Dust for the background and Kona Pickle for the foreground.

Or choose two bright colors and pair them with white and black for a dramatic effect.

This mock-up uses Dreamscape in Geranium, Phoebe Dot in Teal, Wax and Wane in Fog, and Lunar Lights in Night for the background and Kona Haze, Kona Black, Kona Caribbean, and Kona Geranium for the foreground.
